While a journalism student at Florida International University in 1985, Steve got a night job at The Miami Herald monitoring police radios for the newsroom. He soon began writing obituaries and covering street festivals. After earning his bachelor’s degree from FIU in 1987, The Herald promoted Steve to full-time reporter.
From 1987 to 1993, he covered: Surfside, Bay Harbor Islands, Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles, North Bay Village; police and transportation in Coral Gables, South Miami and South Dade; Key West and Monroe County; the Broward Sheriff’s Office and all Broward police departments including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Pompano Beach; Opa-locka, Miami Springs and Northwest Miami-Dade.
Steve became a copy editor and page designer in 1993. From 1999 to 2000, he was a Herald layout editor sharing responsibility for Page 1 and the Metro section front. He shared The Herald’s 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News coverage of young Elian Gonzalez’s return to Cuba.
Beginning in late 2000, Steve became night business editor, designing the Business section front and supervising the department’s copy desk.
Steve joined The Herald’s Features department in late 2005, covering South Florida’s large gay community and began his blog about a year later.

Renee Michelle Harris is the former editor of The Miami Times who currently freelances with the South Florida Times as associate editor and a reporter. The former social worker is also the owner of Universal Writes, a unique operation that provides small businesses and non-profits with high quality, affordable public relations via the simplicity of a well written press release.
Harris graduated from Florida State University with a degree in sociology. After more than a decade in social services, Harris embarked on a second career in the world of journalism. In addition to reporting on a wide variety of subjects for The South Florida Times (formerly Broward Times), Harris has authored several children’s books and feature length screenplays.
She will contribute to our pitch info session by sharing the multitude of reasons (some you may never consider) for alerting the media about your business.
